Why IR Thermography Is Required Under NFPA 70B

Infrared (IR) thermography is now a required component of electrical maintenance programs under NFPA 70B, the Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance. With the 2023 update, NFPA 70B shifted from a “recommended practice” to a mandatory standard, requiring facility owners to proactively maintain electrical systems to reduce the risk of fires, arc flash events, and unplanned downtime. IR thermography plays a critical role because it allows inspectors to identify abnormal heat patterns in electrical panels, switchgear, breakers, and connections—often revealing loose connections, overloads, or failing components long before they cause catastrophic failure.

NFPA 70B specifically calls for condition-based maintenance, and infrared thermography is one of the most effective non-destructive testing methods to meet this requirement. Thermal imaging inspections help document electrical system health, prioritize repairs, and establish baseline performance data. For this reason, the standard emphasizes inspections performed by qualified infrared thermographers using proper procedures and calibrated infrared cameras. Organizations that fail to implement IR inspections as part of their maintenance program may face increased liability, insurance issues, and elevated fire risk—especially in commercial, industrial, healthcare, and mission-critical facilities.
